The town was originally a stop on the Louisville & Nashville railroad line but has quickly grown from a sleepy outpost of 726 in 1960 to be ranked by Forbes as the 10th fastest growing suburb in the US (2007). A walk through Downtown Woodstock brings back the beauty of days gone by with the convenience of today. Walking into the Woodstock Visitors Center at Dean’s Store will give credence to the slogan there: “Where yesterday lives and tomorrow waits”. Opened in an existing building in 1906, the store has remained in the Dean Family since that time. Located at 8588 Main Street in historic Woodstock, Dean’s store provides an eclectic blend of history with a visitor’s center, museum, art gallery, literary lounge and gathering place, all within one store. Since 1981 easy chairs and surroundings from other centuries invite visitors to come in for information and directions. All items sold are fundraisers for local non profits so stop in Monday-Saturday from 10am to 4pm. In recent years, Historic Downtown has received a serious face-lift thanks to a grant from the Atlanta Regional Council to make possible the Livable Centers Initiative Streetscapes Project. Brick paver sidewalks and traffic calming devices like curb-line modifications, roundabouts, and speed humps provide residents and visitors with a more pedestrian friendly environment making it a great town to stroll and spend the day. These new additions; along with additional parking spaces, new landscaping, and street furniture has gotten the attention of PEDS, a non-profit focused on making Metro Atlanta safer and more walkable. According to The Cherokee Tribune, PEDS has given Woodstock its Golden Shoes award for the improvements to the Downtown Woodstock area.
